There was sudden snow from 6 to 7 of April in Jade Mountains. All visitors planning to go to the summit need to bring necessary gear for hiking in the snow and know how to use it. Without a solid competence in using these gear or all necessary gear, please do not attempt to reach the summit.

It snowed from 6 to 7 of April in Jade Mountains. According to the report made today (8 April), there is around 10 cm of snow on the path before reaching Mt. Jade Main Peak (further from Paiyun Lodge). The trail with snow could be icy and slippery. Also, according to the forecast of Central Weather Bureau, it can still be quite cold these days and the snow might not melt in a short time. There are risks of slipping/falling on snow, getting lost in the snow, high altitude illness and hypothermia, etc. It is important to check the group leader as well as the members’ experience of hiking in the snow and prepare all necessary gears (especially helmets, ice axes, and crampons). Pay close attention to the snow, trail condition and members’ condition and examine all risks carefully. Please note that if you don’t have the experience hiking in the snow, don’t have sufficient equipment, or don’t know how to use the equipment, it is strongly discouraged to go to the summit when there’s snow/ice. The staff at Paiyun Mountaineering Center will give the visitors instructions at the trailhead office and Paiyun Lodge.
Reminder:
- Yushan Trail is usually an intermediate trail, yet it will become much more difficult and dangerous to trek when there’s snow/ice. It is absolutely not suitable for purely sightseeing/road trips without adequate hiking experience in the snow since there might be risks to fall off the cliff, get lost in the snowy fog, or get hypothermia.
- Visitors need to prepare the equipment for hiking in the snow, especially helmets, ice axes, and crampons. It is not suggested to use simple anti/slip crampons when there is heavy snow. Since it’s about your safety during the hike, please do not leave out essential gear for convenience, reducing the backpack weight, or cutting down on the expense.
- For your safety, it is suggested to have solid competence in using snow/ice climbing gear. It is not sufficient to buy or rent the equipment. Without proper training and practising, visitors still have the risk of accidents relating to wrong or unfamiliar equipment usage.
